JEFF BEZOS · A SOUTH TEXAS CONNECTION

Before Amazon,
summers with “Pop.”

For Jeff Bezos, time with his grandfather meant cattle, windmills, repairs, and learning how to work through a problem.

His maternal grandfather, Lawrence Preston “Pop” Gise, retired from a career in federal service to the family’s ranch in the Cotulla area. WIRED’s 1999 profile identifies Gise and the ranch connection. [1] The Academy of Achievement describes a 25,000-acre family ranch and preserves a photograph of Bezos there with his grandfather in 1969. [2]

In his 2020 congressional statement, Bezos said he spent summers from ages four to sixteen on his grandparents’ Texas ranch. He remembered a grandfather who restored a broken Caterpillar bulldozer and did his own veterinary work. Bezos credited those experiences with teaching him resourcefulness and persistence when a problem seemed difficult to solve. [3]

Windmills, cattle, and a lesson in kindness +

The work behind the memory

Speaking at Princeton in 2010, Bezos described fixing windmills, vaccinating cattle, and doing chores. He also recalled quieter afternoons watching television with his grandparents. His account gives this connection its texture: everyday work and family routines, remembered long after childhood. [4]

A different kind of lesson

During a family caravan trip, young Bezos made a calculation about his grandmother’s smoking that left her in tears. His grandfather gently explained that kindness could be harder than cleverness. The lesson stayed with him. [4]
